Tina & Al's LEJOG - Stage 3

Tina & Al's LEJOG - Stage 3

For the third stage of our LEJOG we walked from Knighton in Wales to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Our route took us through the quiet Shropshire hills, one of the most important spots of the Industrial Revolution, followed canals through Staffordshire, took us amongst the limestone, moors and reservoirs of the Peak District National Park and finally saw us setting out on the Alternative Pennine Way.

To plan the route I used Cicerone's End to End Trail by Andy Robinson and The Alternative Pennine Way by Denis Brook & Phil Hinchcliffe I didn't pay much for my copy of the APW, certainly not the £49.99 I see someone is currently charging on Amazon (and my copy is actually signed by Denis)! I also used the brilliant Memory Map software, which has the advantage of being a GPS that utilises Ordinance Survey maps. Although it's quite expensive for the initial software, it gives you the added advantage of being able to print out Ordinance Survey maps onto conveniently sized bits of waterproof paper - so no more trying to open up a big map in the middle of a downpour and/or a howling gale!

We started out on 4 September 2010 on the 8:43 train over to Glasgow Queen Street station, where we walked over to Glasgow Central and caught the 10:00 train to Crewe. From Crewe we caught the 13:08 train to Craven Arms, then the 14:36 to Knighton. We finally arrived in Knighton at 14:56. The journey was uneventful and the route dictated by trying to obtain the cheapest fares for two adults. It's become a thing with me, that I'll spend ages fiddling about to find the break points for a journey to get the cheapest fare - I'm an East Anglian and I do like a bargain!

We stayed once more at the lovely Horse & Jockey Inn at Knighton. Unfortunately we weren't able to get the huge room with the king-size bed this time, but the twin room we had was smaller (as reflected in the price), but equally as well appointed.

Below is a summary of the walks and mileage undertaken for this stage: -

Cost of rail travel for two people from Stirling to Knighton - £88.00 (standard class)
On 4 September we stayed at The Horse and Jockey Inn - Wylcwm Place, Knighton, Powys, LD7 1AE Cost - £60.00
