Inverarnan to Tyndrum

9 May 2012 - Inverarnan to Tyndrum

Distance - 12.8 miles
Weather - Sunny, quite warm with the occasional shower
We stayed at - Tyndrum Lodge Hotel, Tyndrum, FK20 8RY  Cost £60.00

Today had the best bit of walking so far. The scenery was fantastic, I'd forgotten how great the area north of Loch Lomond was. It's not until you get out of the car and spend some time walking along Glen Falloch that you see it all.

We started the day standing about by the railway bridge over Dubh Eas, as

Train over Dubh Eas
it's quite scenic there and Alistair thought that a train was due. He was right, and it would seem churlish not to use the picture in this blog - although we took fifty photos that day! (Of the scenery, not the train, I should add).

Falls of Falloch
A little way after that we met up with the Falls of Falloch and stopped to watch them for a while. It was a good job it was a relatively small walk today!

The first half of the day was all uphill, but generally easy, made easier by the warmer weather. We made good time and had an early lunch sitting on a rock above Crianlarich.

The second half was mostly down, through woodland. We had a few

showers, but nothing bad. Once we reached the valley bottom it opened out and we had some really spectacular views of hill all around.

Strange as it may seem, it had been difficult getting accommodation in Tyndrum. There was a big hotel on the outskirts, but that was all full of American tourists and the like doing "Lochs & Glens" holidays. The one we stayed at was quite basic, not all that clean, with an American themed bar, which really wasn't my thing. The food was OK, which was just as well, as all the eateries seemed to shut at 17:00. Tyndrum is in a lovely setting, but the amenities were a bit depressing.

Snowy peaks at Tyndrum
Tomorrow is forecast as bad weather. Typically it's our longest day at nineteen miles. We're hoping it'll hold off until later in the morning as the first six miles are probably the best bit of the walk.
