Tina & Al's LEJOG Stage 6

TINA & AL'S LEJOG - STAGE 6

The sixth stage of our LEJOG followed the route of the West Highland Way (WHW) from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in Inverness-shire. Then from Fort William along the Great Glen Way to Drumnadrochit. Instead of continuing to the end of the Great Glen Way in Inverness, we turned off and followed Glen Urquhart along up to Tomich.

To plan the route I used The End To End Trail - a Cicerone guide written by Andy Robinson for the section to Fort William, along with the brilliant Memory Map software, for the sections from Milngavie to Tomich. Although it's quite expensive for the initial software, Memory Map gives you the added advantage of being able to print out Ordinance Survey maps onto conveniently sized bits of Toughprint waterproof paper - so no more trying to open up a big map in the middle of a downpour and/or a howling gale!

To be honest though, it was only the bit from Drumnadrochit to Tomich that required any significant planning. The West Highland Way is very well waymarked and the Great Glen Way even more so, as it follows the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness.

I am very grateful though to the late John A Butler and his End to End Walk for ideas on how to proceed from Drumnadrochit up to John O'Groats.

We started out on Sunday 6 May 2012 on the 9:28 train from Stirling to Glasgow Queen Street, where we caught the low level 10:24 train to Partick. From Partick we caught the 10:42 train to Milngavie. We arrived in Milngavie (pronounced Mulguy) at 11:00, where we stuck our bags into a taxi bound for the Buchanan Arms in Drymen (pronounced Drimen), whilst we followed on after, on foot.

Below is a summary of the walks and mileage undertaken for this stage: -
